June Sustainably Stylish: Katie
This month I am pleased to introduce Katie as Junes Sustainably stylish feature. I first met Katie when we worked together on REAP's Sustainable Style YYC event and she was integral to showcasing stylish consignment clothing within Calgary. Her clothing also appeared in an article from REAP about the myths of eco fashion and was also featured on a Global TV segment. Since then, I was honored to take part in Katie's fashion show, Retail Therapy Night at Folk Festival Hall, which raised money towards the Juno House, an organization dedicated to supporting young girls and women's mental health. What I find most inspiring about Katie is her ability to bring together and network with incredible local retailers and stylish Calgarians, while also showcasing messages and education about what it means to be sustainably stylish. She always is able to come up with leading-edge stylish clothing and outfits. Katie is definitely a must-watch entrepreneur in Calgary's style scene! Here's to this sustainably stylish girl boss, read more about her below!
1. Tell me a little bit about yourself?
My name is Katie, and I am the epitome of a thrift hunter. I refuse to pay full price for clothing when so many amazing, recycled items are right under our noses for a fraction of the cost. I like prosecco, styling and good deals, hence why I created The Clothing Bar! My biggest joy in life is becoming a part of something new. Tell me all your ideas, and I will listen, and probably find a way to get involved. My second biggest joy in life is being behind the scenes of something amazing. It could be anything from a fashion show, to a grand opening, and I will feel every ounce of excitement If you can't find me in my store, you can bet you will find me in bed working, eating, sleeping, or cuddling my dog.
2. How do you define style for yourself?
Comfy comfy comfy. Sneakers and t-shirts are my thing.
3. What’s your must have style accessory?
A big huge giant CUTE purse! I find I need a lot of things, and those things all have to fit in my bag. inclusive of random snacks, a notebook, and a bobby pin collection.
4. If there was one piece of style advice you would give to others what would be it be?
Find 1 thing that works for you, and expand from there. I am a lover of grey t-shirts, so I play around with my options. If pink high heels are your thing, rock them and pair them with something new. If you love vests, start with that, and try new combos under it. Fashion is only fun if you make it.
5. What sparked your interest in sustainable style?
Honestly, probably a statistic I heard years ago, that 10 million tons of clothing went to the landfill every year, just in North America. If there is a use for it, lets find it, and consignment is such an amazing way to start!
6. What’s your favorite vintage, sustainable, or eco fashion stores? Why?
My own of course! I am also a lover of Nicole Bridger, and Poppy Barley. I love the minimalist looks they create, with such passion for what they do. If you haven't googled them, do it now.
7. Currently wearing?
A black midi skirt, grey t-shirt and a jean vest. The best combo!
