April Sustainably Stylish: Lisa
This month, I am featuring Lisa from Adorn Infusions at the 2016 Retail Therapy Night for the Clothing Bar. I was immediately touched by her story - she's lived a few different career paths and most recently it's been as an entrepreneur for an ethical skin line. The company prides itself on being created to pay homage to our bodies by adorning them with the most beautiful botanicals. The perfumes, colognes, oils and powders are hand crafted using essential oils and ingredients. And an added bonus? No chemicals and no factories. I've used Lisa's products and they smell incredible. So, I wanted to find out a little bit more about this ethical woman behind the beautiful skin line. 1. Tell me a little bit about yourself?
I grew up in good ole Regina, Sask but have been living in Calgary for the past 14 years. I knew I wanted to live in a bigger city, close to the mountains so one day after very little planning I packed up my dodge shadow and headed for Calgary. I have worn many hats over the years from Interior designer to food truck owner, to now Apothecary Adornments. I've always believed in challenging myself to do the things I didn't think were possible. Growing up my parents encouraged me to explore many avenues to find out for myself what I loved. I am forever grateful to them for instilling curiosity and adventure within me. Those early teachings have helped me so much on my journey.
I have always held a deep reverence for the natural world. I used to make potions in my bedroom from dirt, grass, rocks, seeds and magic water. Then I would store them in my room and try to get my sister to drink them. haha! Now I've channeled that childhood magician into something a little more beneficial. I'm lucky enough to be able to earn a living doing what makes me feel creatively alive and nourished. I am honored to work with plants in all of their forms and have the privilege of teaching people and helping them heal through aromatherapy and medicinal botanicals. 2. How do you define style for yourself?
I love to be comfortable. I want to clothe myself in things I can move in and spill stuff on, but I also want clothing that makes me feel beautiful. If I can purchase it from local artists I call that a win. I want ethically made clothing, I like to know a bit about the person I'm purchasing from. 3. What’s your must have style accessory?
My must have style accessory is a sacred rose gold Hamsa amulet necklace, it was given to me by a dear friend who has since passed. If you call a housecoat a must have accessory then I'll add that to the list.
4. If there was one piece of style advice you would give to others what would be it be?
I lead a pretty minimalistic lifestyle so I would say buy the things that bring you the most amount of joy possible. When it no longer makes you feel happy, consign it or give it to someone else in need. The gift of giving keeps the world turning in the right direction. 5. What sparked your interest in sustainable style?
Once I started downsizing my life I saw the need to only purchase well-made, quality pieces that fit within my tiny loft. My good friend Britt from Flopsy life came over and did a full closet overhaul. She is an incredible inspiration to me. She is my go to when I need something specific. She helped me downsize my closet and made it easier for me to just grab and go. Pretty much everything I have in my closet has about 5 different uses. I LOVE IT. My brain is happy because I have to think less about what I'm going to wear and my body is happy because I'm wearing fabrics that are natural and breathable. 6. What’s your favorite vintage, sustainable, or eco fashion stores? Why?
I am just getting started on this wild journey of transitioning to sustainable fashion. I am getting to know more of the designers, their styles, their fabrics and their process. At current, I love consignment shopping through Calgary's Clothing Bar, Fond Boutique and now Flopsy life!
